The Janusz Bryzek Abundance through MEMS award seeks to recognize
graduate or undergraduate students whose work best exemplifies the application of MEMS to Abundance. Abundance refers to a future in which all of humanity has access to clean water, food, energy, health care, housing, education and everything else to live an abundant fulfilling life due to rapid developments in exponential technologies including MEMS. Janusz Bryzek was a pioneering and prolific MEMS entrepreneur who started 11 companies and was committed to the vision of Abundance. This award, honoring Janusz' legacy, will recognize emerging researchers in MEMS and related fields whose work significantly contributes to the vision of Abundance.
Application Materials

- Up to 500-word abstract describing the applicant's research, how the research contributes to the solution of a significant global problem, and why the applicant, therefore, is deserving of this award.
- Abstract number and title, if applicable.
- Up to one page, submitted as a PDF, of images or figures with captions illustrating the research described in the abstract.
- Up to two support letters (optional). Support letters should not be more than one page. Support letters can be from the applicant's thesis advisor, research collaborators, etc.
Deadline
15 May 2024, 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time (EST)
Eligibility
Applicants must be students (graduate or undergraduate) conducting research in MEMS, micro/nano systems, or related fields. Applicants must attend the Hilton Head 2024 Workshop.
Evaluation Criteria and Process
Winning applications will be those that best exemplify the application of MEMS to the spirit of Abundance. Thus, applications will be evaluated on the potential of the research to have a significant effect on a global problem, rigor and creativity of the research, and impact in the real world through e.g. entrepreneurial activities, commercialization, collaboration with non-profit organizations, etc.
Award
- Formal recognition during the Hilton Head Workshop
- A commemorative plaque
- A $1,000 scholarship
About Janusz Bryzek
Dr. Janusz Bryzek was a world-renowned pioneer in the field of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), founding and commercializing his MEMS passion vis-à-vis 11 companies over his 40 plus year career ... from pressure sensors to multiplexers, IMUs to ultrasonic imagers. An optimistic technology enthusiast, he envisioned the abundance of ubiquitous low-cost MEMS devices as a means of improving the quality of lives globally. As such, he operated at the convergence of MEMS, Entrepreneurism, and Abundance.
